Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Twin Modelling of Machine Learning-Enabled Machinery used for Innovative Offshore Applications at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science. The position is vacant from 01.08.2022.

The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.

Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of two years and four months.

The position will be affiliated with the following projects: Dynavac Separator A sustainable and responsible system to handle offshore drilling waste and Swell Energy Convertor Proof of Principle Study for PTO system . The position is financed by two projects co-funded by the Research Council of Norway and the industry.

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

About the research projects

The postdoctoral project will focus on developing digital twins for the detailed modelling and analysis of the innovative machine learning-enabled machinery systems investigated in the research projects. The purpose is to allow for more optimal design, operations and maintenance of these systems.

Dynavac Separator A sustainable and responsible system to handle offshore drilling waste

This project is owned and led by Dynamic Well Solutions AS. In this project, the Dynavac Separator (DynaSep) which is a novel, fully integrated waste handling system that can allow drilling mud waste to be treated directly onboard an offshore rig, is proposed. This system is a digitalised, sustainable, responsible and cost-efficient waste management solution. DynaSep will process the drilling mud waste onboard the rig to a treatable level by the rig s own drilling waste processing units. This is highly beneficial for the environmental footprint, as it eliminates the need to send the drilling mud waste to shore for treatment. This also entails significant cost savings and the elimination of weather-dependent and dangerous crane lifting activities. DynaSep is characterised by a fully integrated automatic system supported by computer and machine learning, and all operations are performed automatically in a seamless fashion. Moreover, the product can be installed on offshore drilling platforms such as jack-ups, semi-submersibles and drillships. This project will design, build, demonstrate, quantify the performance and show the robustness of the DynaSep system using advanced state-of-the-art digital twin models in combination with detailed reliability assessments.

Swell Energy Convertor Proof of Principle Study for PTO system

This project is owned and led by Ocean Energies AS. In this project, the proof of principle of the power take-off system in the swell energy convertor (SWC), a large wave energy converter (a single unit is 50 to 70 m wide), is performed. The SWC will utilise Norway s proud history and high offshore engineering and construction competency, ranging from fishing vessels to state-of-the-art offshore drilling rigs. Careful planning is required to reduce both technical and financial risks when developing such a large offshore construction. This pre-project will develop a digital twin, initial baseline design and initial latching control design of the PTO system that is crucial for the continuation of research and development (R&D) in the main project.

Qualification requirements

You must have a ph.d. with a specialisation relevant for the project. The ph.d. thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

You must also have experience with the development of large complex digital twins, preferably using multi-body methods, finite element methods and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

It will be an advantage if you have experience with machine learning and design of mechanical systems.

You must have good command of both oral and written English.
